Banquets & Irish Nights

Bunratty Castle

Bunratty Castle is the most complete and authentic medieval castle in Ireland.
Built in 1425, and plunderd on many occasions, it was authentically restored in 1954 to it's former medieval splendour, with furnishings and tapestries capturing the mood and style of the times.
The castle is famous for it's medieval banquets which are held year round.
Within the castle grounds is the Bunratty Folk Park, where 19th century Irish life is tellingly recreated.
The Folk Park contains typical 19th century rural and urban dwellings . There are 8 farmhouses, 2 watermills, a blacksmith's forge, a church, a recently restored walled garden, a village street complete with pub, post office, school, doctor's house, hardware shop, printers, drapery shop, pawn shop and village hotel.
Hazelbrook House - Home of the Hughes brothers who produced HB ice-cream. Learn about the evolution of ice-cream making.
Refreshments - There is a tea-room where morning and afternoon teas, light refreshments and snacks are served.
Mac's Pub - In the village street Mac's Pub serves lunches, soups, sandwiches and drinks. Admission to Mac's Pub after the Folk Park closes is free. Traditional Irish music is featured on a regular basis.
The famous Medieval Castle Banquets are held in Bunratty Castle. Here you can wine and dine, while enjoying the superb entertainments provided by the Bunratty entertainers. You are promised a truly enchanting evening - from the moment of arrival and your first taste of the honey rich mead, through to the end of your enjoyable feast.

Knappogue Castle &
Medieval Banquets

Knappogue Castle & Medieval Castle Banquets

This magnificent castle was built in 1467 by Sean MacNamara. It has had a long and varied history - from battle site to a comfortable dwelling place. Knappogue remained in MacNamara hands until 1659 when it was confiscated by Cromwell's parliament and granted to a "Roundhead", Arthur Smith. However, after the monarchy was restored in 1670, Knappogue was returned to it's MacNamara Owners.
The MacNamara Clan sold the castle to the Scotts in 1800 and they carried out major restoration and extension work. In 1855 it was acquired by Lord Dunboyne who continued the restoration work, which today also includes a 19th century walled garden and a formal rose garden.
Today, medieval castle banquets are held in the castle. The ladies of the castle, aided by the Earl's butler, will delight you with a truly magnificent show of music, song and dance. This delightful evening is complemented with dinner and flowing wine.

Craggaunowen - The Living Past

Craggaunowen - The Living Past

During the Bronze Age, people protected themselves against marauding warriors by building their homes on lakes. An example of such a lake dwelling, or "Crannog" constructed from wattles, reeds and mud is to be seen at Craggaunowen, the Living Past - a recreation of Celtic Life.
Visit the Ring-Fort - a true reproduction of a farmer's house, dating from the 4th or 5th century, "an Iron-Age roadway" and an outdoor cooking site.
The Celts were renowned seafarers - a major feature is a replica of the Brendan Boat built by Tim Severin who sailed from Ireland to Greenland, re-enacting the voyage of St Brendan, reputed to have discovered America centuries before Columbus.
See animals such as Soay sheep and wild boar, which are actual species of the pre-historic era.
Craggaunowen Castle is the centrepiece of the visit and is strategically positioned, standing defiantly on a crag overlooking the lake.
Refreshments - Tea, coffee, light refreshments, fresh scones and sandwiches are served. Picnic areas are provided beside the car park and a visitor's shop.

Dunguaire Medieval Castle Banquet

Dunguaire Medieval Castle Banquet

Dunguaire Castle, built in 1520 by the O'Hynes clan, is situated on the picturesque shores of Galway Bay. The castle takes it's name from the nearby ancient fort of Guaire, King of Connaught, who died in 662 AD.
In the early 17th century the castle passed into the hands of the Martyn's of Galway. Richard Martyn, Mayor of Galway, lived here until 1642 and his family, the Martyn's of Tulira Castle, owned the castle until this century.
In 1924 Dunguaire was bought and repaired by Oliver St John Gogarty, the famous surgeon and literary figure. In 1954 the castle was acquired by Christobel Lady Amptill who completed the restoration.
Today, the restored castle gives an insight to the lifestyle of the people who lived there from 1520 to modern times. The castle is 27km (17 miles) from Galway City off the N18. Within the castle there is also a jewellery and craft shop.
Enjoy a unique evening in one of Ireland's most picturesque castles. Dunguaire's banquet is an enchanting evening with food to please the palate and entertainment to lift the soul. The superb enteratinment provided by the Castle entertainers consists of extracts from the great literary writers such as Synge, Yeats, Shaw and O'Casey which draws upon Irish history, myth and legend for it's inspiration.
