Lough Derg is one of Ireland's largest lakes and is generally referred to as being Ireland's pleasure lake. At 32,000 acres it is almost an inland sea but doesn't have tides and is fresh water, not salt water and is a part of the River Shannon which is itself Ireland's longest river, passing from Dublin in the East down to Limerick in the South-west it effectively cuts Ireland in two. Consequently it is an unrivalled asset, not only to the peoples of the three adjoining counties (Galway, Clare and North Tipperary) but also to the many thousands of people who come and visit the area on day trips as well as holidays.
Lough Derg can be navigated along it's entire length of just under 40km from Portumna at it's nothern tip down to the twin towns of Ballina and Killaloe at the southern end and also has navigable access to over 200km of inland waterways.
Lough Derg itself is renowned for having some of the most varied fishing in the whole of Ireland. Trout, Salmon, Pike and course fishing (Perch, Roach & Tench) are all available.
